The KitKat was first introduced in 1935 under the name ‘Chocolate Crisp’ by Rowntree’s, a candy company based in England. The company was named after Henry Isaac Rowntree, who bought a small grocery store in York that also operated a cocoa foundry. The KitKat brand name and logo was introduced in 1937 and the famous strapline “have a break, have a KitKat” was first used in 1958.
Today, it is owned by Nestlé, which acquired Rowntree’s in 1988. The name comes from a famous political and literary club of 17th century London called Kit Cat club, owned by pastry chef Christopher Cat.
KitKat became an international treat in the 1950’s. Today, the iconic brand is present in more than 80 countries.
